Man was more than two times over the limit

An expatriate worker almost knocked over two pedestrians when he shot a red light on his bike while drunk.

Florin Teleman, 28, pleaded guilty to driving while more than two-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit when he appeared at Magistrates' Court.

Junior Crown counsel Auralee Cassidy told the court that Police were in a stationary patrol vehicle outside Number Six Shed, on Front Street, when they saw Teleman.

The traffic lights were on red and a number of pedestrians were crossing on the northern side of the street, when Teleman travelled past, heading west at speed on a 100 cc bike.

The Police observed him almost collide with two pedestrians and then appear to be losing his balance on the bike as he approached the Birdcage traffic podium.

They made him to stop and noticed that his eyes were glazed and he was unsteady on his feet. Asked if he had been drinking, the defendant replied that he'd had two beers.

A breath test at Hamilton Police Station showed him to have 213 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, when the legal limit is 80 milligrams.

In addition to pleading guilty to impaired driving, Teleman also admitted disobeying a traffic light and driving without a valid licence.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner meted out 21 demerit points and a driving ban which put Teleman off the road for 18 months. He also fined him $1,200.
