Man with a knife under bike seat tried to escape from Police

A 50-year-old man was caught with a knife under his motorcycle seat after he crashed the vehicle while trying to escape Police.

Kevin Rawlins, the brother of shooting death victim Raymond Troy (Yankee) Rawlins, admitted to a string of offences stemming from the July 25 chase possession of a bladed article, failing to stop for Police, driving in a dangerous manner and having no licence or third party insurance.

The Court Street, Pembroke resident denied a further charge of having fraudulent documents which caused his licence plate to read 2010 instead of 2009.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith told Magistrates' Court Police saw Rawlins commit a traffic offence not before the court at this time, while travelling on a black Honda motorcycle.

The officers indicated for Rawlins to pull over but he ignored them and a high-speed chase ensued.

Rawlins sped past the junction of Union and North Streets causing traffic travelling east and west to brake suddenly to avoid collision.

He eventually turned into the Transport Control Department entrance, where he lost control of his cycle and collided with a wall.

Officers searched Rawlins and the cycle. They found a black knife with a cutting edge of six inches secured in the bike seat.

Rawlins said he had used the knife to go fishing.

Yesterday Rawlins said: "The knife was a fishing knife which was in my seat. It smelled like fish. It was a fillet knife. The Friday night I went fishing and forgot to take it out of the seat of my bike.

"As I was turning into TCD, that is when I hit the wall. That is when I lost control. I ran the stop sign and I was nervous because the bike wasn't insured — so it was stupid on my part I guess."

"I was only a block from my house...so it wasn't like a chase. I stay on Till's Hill. TCD is right at the bottom of the hill."

Rawlins was ordered to return to Magistrates' Court this morning for sentencing. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released him on $5,000 bail.
