Marathon Derby stamps issued
Historic stamps have been released to commemorate 100 years of the Bermuda Marathon Derby.
Telecommunications Minister Terry Lister told the House of Assembly a series of stamps would represent celebrities such as Arthur (Goo Gip) Lambert, who the race four years in a row from 1952, and 11-time champion 'Sir' Stanley Burgess.
The Minister said in a Ministerial Statement on Friday: "In this historic year, as we celebrate our 400th anniversary, I am proud to be here to commemorate one of Bermuda's oldest events and traditions, the Bermuda Marathon Derby.
"This collection of stamps continues the Bermuda Post Office's efforts to portray all facets of Bermuda's heritage, culture and history.
"There is a group of individuals without whose hard work and dedication the marathon would not exist today."
Mr. Lister praised organisers over the years: Donald Smith, Cecil Minors, Berwyn Cann, Richard Tucker and Gina Tucker.
"It makes one tremble to imagine the amount of hard work and time which must be devoted to producing an event as large as our annual Marathon Derby," he said.
