Men from across the Island are being asked to come together this month to discuss cancer.

A meeting for men only will be held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on June 17 as part of Men's Health Awareness Month.

Discussion topics will include cancer warning signs and questions men should ask doctors.

The meeting has been organised by Bermuda Cancer and Health (BCH).

The charity encourages regular screenings for both prostate and colorectal cancer two of the most common forms of cancer in Bermudian men.

While Bermudian men know they should get tested as they get older many put it off, said Deborah Titterton Narraway of BCH.

"Bermudians don't tend to go by the recommendations," she said. "A lot of the time they wait for their doctor to tell them that maybe they should get tested.

"By being proactive with the tests you are much more likely to catch the problem early, and early detection can make a huge difference."

Men should start getting checked for prostate cancer after the age of 40. Men over 50 should have colonoscopies every five to ten years, to check for colorectal cancer.

Those with a family history of cancer should start screening procedures earlier.

The meeting begins at 6.30 p,m. Information stalls will be set up from 5.30 p.m. Admission is free.
