A doctor who went on a spending spree with his colleagues' bank cards has been jailed.

Olubukunmi Ewedemi, a Nigerian surgical resident at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) , admitting stealing co-workers' cards before buying a $369 DVD recorder and $359 worth of DVDs from Hamilton stores.

He also pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving a colour printer worth $539 using the same method.

Ewedemi, 35, of Home Port Drive, Hamilton Parish, was sentenced to four months in prison for each of five dishonesty offences on Tuesday.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered him to serve ten days immediately, with the remaining time suspended. It is understood Ewedemi is suspended from KEMH and has made arrangements to leave the Island on June 7.

Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke said Ewedemi stole a Bank of Butterfield Visa card from Calvin Steede in November last year and used it to buy a Panasonic DVD recorder from P-Tech A.V.

He stole a Butterfield debit card from Ian Fulton in September and used it to buy 19 DVDs from Double W. Home Entertainment.

And he obtained a Brother Network Printer using a card belonging to Cynthia Opoku-Akoto between October 10 last year and February 6 this year.

Magistrates' Court heard Ewedemi paid back Mr. Steede, and that he was suffering from depression at the time of the offences.
