No need for alarm over coral spawning

Coral reefs across the Island are currently spawning leaving a pink or salmon film on the water's surface.

The Department of Environmental Protection advised the public not to be alarmed by the film on the waters surrounding Bermuda this week.

A spokesman said the film is not related to the BP Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and is actually a sign of healthy reefs.

Coral spawn is usually pink or salmon in colour and it may be observed in large patches on different parts of the reefs around Bermuda.

The spokesman added: "Members of the public are advised that the spawn is nothing to be concerned about and is actually a good sign as the coral reefs are reproducing and the spawn will go on to form new corals around the Island."
