Park is named after community figure Drew
A former St. George's community activist has been honoured with the official naming of a park in his memory.
Ernest 'Dickie' Drew was a St. George's common councillor and served as president of both the Bermuda Petticoat Softball League and the Wellington Rovers.
Environment Minister El James and former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith officially opened Drew's Bay Community Area, acknowledging the many contributions Mr. Drew made to the eastern end of the Island.
"This Government is committed to remembering the 'Heroes' of Bermuda and is actively renaming schools, public buildings, roads and parks like this to ensure we never forget those who helped build this great country that we all enjoy today," said Mr. James.
"I encourage members of the community to teach the youngsters about the people like Mr. Ernest Drew and the impact they had on their lives. I also encourage local residents to take ownership of this park – and to ensure that it is kept clean, that graffiti and vandalism never rear their ugly head, and that all who use this park can do so in a safe and friendly environment."
The Community Areas Programme was set up in 2005 with a view to improving the lives of Bermuda residents by improving the environment in neighborhoods across the Island.
Added the Environment Minister: "We have already opened several community areas including Harlem Heights in Hamilton Parish, the Olivebank Community Field in Warwick, the Purvis Primary playground and field in Warwick, Ladies Chambers on North Shore Road, Pembroke and another project at Pig's Field, Pembroke is due to be completed in a few weeks."
