Police found glassworker with cannabis in parked car

A Pembroke glassworker was fined more than $2,000 after he admitted possessing cannabis in an increased penalty zone.

Chandler Jones, from Princess Estate, was found with just over a gram of cannabis in his pocket on February 6.

According to prosecutor Karen King, Police on patrol on Middletown Lane noticed Jones sitting in a green car at around 9.25 p.m.

The officers said that once Jones noticed them, he began to fidget. The officers approached the vehicle and as they did they noticed a strong smell of cannabis.

Police searched the car under the Misuse of Drugs Act and found nothing in the vehicle, but a plastic twist containing 1.21 grams of cannabis was found in his front jacket pocket.

Duty counsel Marc Daniels said Jones had not been smoking in the vehicle, but Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined the defendant $800, and added another $1,500 because the area he was caught in was an increased penalty zone.

Mr. Warner added: "It's expensive to smoke weed around the parks."
