Police issue Christmas crime warning

Police are urging homeowners to use extra caution in the run-up to Christmas and have issued the following tips:

¦ Always lock your doors and windows when leaving the house. If you leave for an extended period, ask a neighbour or family member to watch over your property and collect any deliveries.

¦ Do not leave holiday gifts on display through your doors and windows.

n Criminals sometimes pose as couriers or people asking for charity donations. Always ask for identification and ask how the funds will be used. Only donate to recognised charitable organisations.

n Make sure you lock the doors and windows of your vehicle. Do not leave purchases on view but lock them in the trunk.

n When shopping, avoid carrying large amounts of cash and pay by cheque, credit or debit card whenever possible.

n Always shield the keypad when you use an ATM to avoid someone noting your PIN number.

n Update your property inventory with the details, value and serial numbers of new items, plus photographs. Supply copies to your insurance company. Also U-Mark electronic equipment and note down the serial numbers.

¦ After Christmas, avoid leaving boxes outside on view for garbage pickup, as thieves break into homes after the holidays. Do not let them know you have a new computer, TV, or other electronic equipment.

Operation U-Mark literature and stickers can be obtained from any Police station.
