Popular Jazz bar Hubie's put up for sale
Hubie's Bar is up for sale.
The building, in Angle Street, Pembroke, was advertised for $1.5 m in this week's The Royal Gazette's real estate section.
Co-owner David Williams said the two-storey building is to be sold "as is", and there were no conditions of sale to keep Hubie's going.
Whether the legendary jazz club will survive is dependant on the new owners.
"The new owner might decide they don't want a bar there, that's up to them. But I would like Hubie's to stay," said Mr. Williams.
"They've been there for so long and they're good tenants. A new owner would have to give them proper notice but if they're lucky they will be able to stay."
Mr. Williams and his co-owner inherited the property from Dr. Amy Williams and her husband Claude 47 years ago.
The other owner of the building, a 91-year-old woman, does not currently wish to be named due to legal negotiations.
Mr. Williams however, says he is selling the property for "financial reasons".
Hubie's Bar has hosted the best jazz musicians on the Island for some 30 years, and occupies the ground floor of the building. An apartment is situated on the second storey.
Mr. Williams, 83, said: "The whole building is for sale. It includes the bar and a beautiful apartment upstairs."
Interested buyers so far include the present owner of Hubie's Eleanor Brown, wife of the late Hubert Brown, and a local musician.
Mr. Williams said: "I spoke to Eleanor and she seems very interested. Hubie was a good person. He only stayed open until 10 p.m. at night, and his wife does the same thing. Hubie's has always been run in an orderly fashion, with no trouble whatsoever."
A 50-year-old saxophonist who is keen on buying the property told The Royal Gazette: "I'm interested in developing the building. I would expand the bar and if Mrs. Brown wanted to stay on, that would be welcomed.
"It's very important we have a venue like this in Bermuda because there isn't anywhere else like this with such a reputation and cultural history."
