Portuguese Men-of-War washing up
The Department of Parks has issued a warning to the public after over 100 Portuguese Men-of-War washed up on Horseshoe Bay yesterday.
They are said to have been washing up on the beaches in larger numbers this week, particularly along the South Shore.
Lifeguards have made the decision to raise the yellow warning flag, indicating caution should be taken on the beach and in the water. "If the situation becomes worse we may be forced to raise the red flag to keep people out of the water," said lifeguard superintendent Nathan Trott.
Swimmers are advised to use extreme care while swimming to avoid coming in contact with Men-of-War. If stung, victims are urged to rinse with salt water and remove any tentacles from the skin using a stick or towel.
Affected areas should be treated with vinegar, followed by water and a warm compress. Remaining tentacles can be removed by applying shaving cream with a tongue depressor or credit card.
The Department of Parks can be reached with concerns about Portuguese Men-of-War at 236-5902.
