Sandys man jailed for assaulting Policewoman
A father-of-three from Sandys has been jailed for six months for assaulting a Police officer more than four years after the offence happened.
Jamaine Quidir Salaam, 36, was arrested on April 16, 2005, at White Hill Field, for assaulting a female Police officer and using offensive words.
According to the charges, Salaam entered the field on an unlicensed motorcycle, and was approached by a female officer.
Confronted, Salaam began "waving his hands about violently," causing the officer to return to her Police car. Once in the car, Salaam slammed the car door on the officers left shin.
Salaam was arrested for assaulting the officer, and taken to Somerset Police Station, where he made lewd and obscene comments to the arresting officer while staring at her crotch, Magistrates' Court was told.
Salaam was originally scheduled to appear before Magistrates' Court in July 2005, but did not appear.
After being arrested on a warrant, he appeared before court in relation to the matter on August 8, 2008, and pleaded not guilty.
A trial date was set for November 27 of that year, but Salaam again failed to appear.
On Wednesday he pleaded guilty to the offences and Magistrate Khamisi Tukunbo told Salaam: "You have three children to set an example to.
"Look at the nature of the offences. Look at the language used, look at the violence."
Despite pleading guilty to the offences, Salaam told the Magistrate that he did not commit the offences.
"That wasn't me, but I want to get rid of these offences," he said.
Salaam was sentenced to six months on both charges, with the time to run concurrently.
