Top lawyer arrested

Lawyer Charles Richardson

Prominent lawyer Charles Richardson was arrested earlier this week after Police executed a search warrant on a home, The Royal Gazette has learned.

Several highly placed sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Mr. Richardson, 38, was arrested at a Club Road, Smith's home on Tuesday night.

No charges have been brought.

In a statement, Police said a 38-year-old man had been arrested and had been subsequently bailed, although they refused to comment on whether it was Mr. Richardson.

In the statement, Police said a quantity of suspected controlled drugs had also been seized. The Royal Gazette understands that Police believe that the drugs seized is cannabis.

Yesterday afternoon Mr. Richardson told The Royal Gazette that any queries into the matter should be directed to defence lawyer Elizabeth Christopher. Ms Christopher said she had no comment to make when contacted.

Mr. Richardson was called to the Bermuda Bar in 2005 in front of family, friends and many in the legal fraternity. Puisne Judge Ian Kawaley called him a man of "exceptional talents" during the ceremony.

He is now considered to be one of the top defence lawyers on the Island.

A Police statement issued yesterday said: "Around 9.45 p.m. on Tuesday, Police executed a search warrant at a Club Road, Smith's Parish residence.

"As a result, a 38-year-old Smith's Parish man was arrested and a quantity of suspected controlled drug seized.

"The Smith's Parish man was subsequently bailed. Inquiries are ongoing."
