Trial date set for man who allegedly disrupted Senate

A man who allegedly barged into the Senate and shouted obscenities at the Attorney General in July was released without bail as he awaits his trial next week

Burnell Cross, 66, has spent the last two months in jail awaiting his trial because he was unwilling, or unable, to sign bail papers and witnesses were frequently off the Island.

He pleaded not guilty to unlawfully and maliciously disturbing the Senate at his original court appearance.

At the time he also asked Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner to find him somewhere to stay and refused to pay his $1,000 bail, resulting in him spending his time in Westgate.

Cross was arrested on July 8 after he walked into the Senate and, it is alleged, shouted: "That b***h stole money from my mama".

At the time he is said to have claimed Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Senator Kim Wilson, had acted as his mother's lawyer and stolen money from her.

Senate President Carol-Ann Bassett told Cross to leave but he allegedly refused and it is claimed he then shouted: "You told me to f**k off Col. (Senator David) Burch so I'm telling you to f**k off. I am letting you know. There's going to be a lot of action."

He was ushered out by Sen. Bean, the Clerk, and a Police officer on duty, and arrested by CID officers.

Crown counsel Maria Sofianos told the court last week she was unable to start the trial as Sen. Bean, a witness to the event, was off the Island.

Mr. Warner recommended that the Crown drop the charges as Cross had already spent two months in jail. However, Ms Sofianos said the Crown was unable to do that.

Cross also said he felt he has been treated unfairly: "I would like to state that your legal system is abusive to me. The people involved who are running the court are the ones who are not showing up.

"If it was anyone else you would have thrown the case out."

Mr. Warner releases Cross on his own recognisance while he awaits his trial on Thursday.
