UBP's Jackson blasts Minister's 'abysmal' record on statements

Louise Jackson MP

Shadow Health Minister Louise Jackson has blasted her Government counterpart for what she termed his "abysmal" record in giving the public accurate statistics.

The Opposition MP claimed on Friday that Health Minister Walter Roban needed to "get his act together" after releasing "not correct" information on the FutureCare health insurance scheme for seniors and on swine flu (H1N1) deaths.

She said Mr. Roban repeatedly claimed that 3,100 seniors were signed up to FutureCare before eventually admitting that it was actually 736 less.

And she demanded to know why there was confusion over whether the Island had suffered any swine flu deaths.

Chief Medical Officer John Cann said in a statement on January 6: "There have been two deaths recorded in Bermudians with influenza, including one laboratory confirmed case of 2009 H1N1 influenza."

On January 19, Mr. Roban clarified that no one here had died as a direct result of swine flu.

Mrs. Jackson told the House of Assembly: "It appears to me and to many others that the Minister of Health has repeatedly used numbers that are not correct."

She said Mr. Roban regularly abused her for criticising Government when he ought to be spending his time imparting essential facts to citizens.

"It's enough to make you cry," she said. "The public deserves better than this. I would ask this Minister to stop heaping abuse on me when his record at this point is abysmal when it comes to accuracy in numbers. They are not just questionable; they are totally wrong."

Mr. Roban said Mrs. Jackson was misleading the House and the Country and her criticism was unjustified.
