Wayne Smith now Director of Labour and Training
Wayne Smith has been formally appointed Director of Labour and Training, after serving as Acting Director for five months.
According to a press release, Major Smith assumed the temporary position in April, following the resignation of Milton Scott.
Effective immediately he is now responsible for managing and coordinating the operations of the ministry, under the general direction of Permanent Secretary Derrick Binns.
He will also work under the policy direction of Minister of Labour Home Affairs and Housing.
Major Smith, who holds an MBE from Webster University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Acadia, said: "I am humbled and pleased to have been appointed Director, Labour and Training.
"I look forward to the challenge and to working with the team at the Department to provide quality Labour Relations and Training and Employment services, as well as National Certification and Apprenticeship programmes for the people of Bermuda."
Before starting a career in Government, Major Smith had an extensive career in the Bermuda Regiment.
He served as an Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Bermuda from 1999 to 2000 and was involved in numerous military training operations, including 19 overseas.
He also served as the Regiment's public relations officer until his retirement in 2007.
Outside the Regiment, he worked in banking at Butterfield and in wireless technology at M3 Wireless.
He also worked as manager of sports promotion at the Department of Tourism from 1992 until 1998; and as Coordinator of Security Services at the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety in 2006.
