We love you Johnny
As Johnny Barnes celebrates his 85th birthday today, people paid tribute to one of best-known personalities on the Island.
The Minister of Culture and Social Rehabilitation, Dale Butler, said: "Happy birthday and best wishes. Keep up the good work."
Opposition Leader Kim Swan said: "Mr. Johnny Barnes' presence in the morning is extremely beneficial. As an East End commuter we do not get the blessing of his daily greetings, but on the occasions where I have passed by him his unfailing commitment to smile and wave is in stark contrast to the stress many who pass by him are feeling. Ironically, in a country where there is increasingly more stress, Mr. Barnes has been most refreshing."
And Opposition Senator Michael Dunkley said: "I am not sure how long Mr. Barnes has been at the roundabout at the Foot of the Lane, but I can clearly recall the first moment when I became aware of him at the spot. It must have been ten to 15 years ago and I was filling in for one of our drivers/salesmen on an early morning route that covered the town area.
"One of my first stops at about 4.30 a.m. was the old Crow Lane Bakery, and as I pulled the truck up to the front of the store I thought I heard someone shout 'Good morning my brother'. I looked around but as it was dark I could not see anyone.
"As I unloaded the goods I kept hearing the call out and finally I saw Johnny doing his thing in the dark, even with the early morning crowd being very sparse.
"The sun rises in the east every day and Johnny beats it all the time! He has hardly missed a day and it is my belief that due to his passionate daily delivery of a friendly good morning, he has created a persona that is expected, looked forward to, and brightens many a day.
"All vibrant communities have people like this who do something they really enjoy doing, and which many consider out of the norm. Johnny has carved a special niche in our community and indeed does play a valuable role in the culture of our society."
