AG reports progress on new crime and justice laws
Senators received an update on legislation designed to tackle crime and violence on the Island.
Attorney General Kim Wilson said her department had worked hard in drafting laws that would adequately meet the considerable challenges facing the community.
"I am pleased with the very significant progress that has been made within the Ministry of Justice to develop and proactively develop and implement measures to address the very serious challenges that our community faces," she said on Wednesday.
"However, as with all justice initiatives, it is important to appreciate the very fine balance that must be maintained between effectively addressing the challenges that we face as a community, regarding the maintenance of law and order, and the avoidance of unnecessarily punitive measures that fail to take into account the sensitive underlying social issues.
"In this regard, the Ministry team will continue to embrace a collaborative, inter-governmental approach whilst engaging in public consultation where necessary."
Some of the bills to be tabled this year include the Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2010 which would give the Police more powers, the Jurors Amendment Bill, which would widen the jury pool, parental responsibility legislation, a judicial video conferencing system in the courts and the Liquor Licensing Act.
