Barritt canvasses regularly – despite comfortable win

Veteran United Bermuda Party candidate John Barritt was returned to the House of Assembly for the fourth time in 2007 as an MP for Constituency 12, Devonshire South Central.

Mr. Barritt received 722 votes a comfortable majority of 601 over his opponent Progressive Labour Party candidate Linda Merritt. She received 122 votes, which was 39 more than PLP candidate Aurelia Burch garnered in the 2003 election.

Mr. Barritt said yesterday that his almost 20 years in politics has led to deep relationships with his constituents. However he pointed out that some of his constituents may soon change a newly drawn electoral map was tabled recently in the House of Assembly.

"I do canvas on a regular basis. For a lot of them I have had a relationship with them since I first got into politics," he said. "The shape and size of the constituency has changed, but it's about a relationship in Bermuda.

"I understand about that [how changing the boundaries works] because I was on the first boundary commission. But I will be sad to give up the relationship with people I built up over the years."

In 2007 there were three spoiled ballots. Voter turnout was 79.18 percent with 847 voters taking part.
