Breaking News : 17-year-old shooting victim in critical condition

A forensics officer enters the scene at the Western Stars Sports Club at the junction of Bakery Lane and St. John's Road, guarded by armed police officers following a shooting late Sunday night.

A 17-year-old girl shot at Western Stars Sports club is now in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The teenager and a 39-year-old man were shot by gunmen who fired indiscriminately into the Pembroke club last night.

"The 39-year-old man is in stable condition on a general ward," a Police spokesman told The Royal Gazette this afternoon. "The [teenager] is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit."

Both victims were taken to hospital with abdomen injuries following the incident at Western Stars, on St. John's Road, Pembroke, shortly before midnight. The man's injuries were said not to be life-threatening.

Police were unable to confirm how many shots were fired as the suspects travelled west on a bike along the road, apparently shooting randomly into the venue.

It marked the end of a violent Easter holiday for Bermuda, with one man shot dead while flying a kite with his children at Victor Scott primary school on Good Friday; and one shot and another stabbed in a large fight in the Royal Artillery Association club in St. George's on Saturday night.

Widespread rumours of further attacks throughout Sunday turned out to be false, with tensions said to be high on a key day of local football.

Speaking at Dandy Town in the early hours of this morning, Police spokesman Dwayne Caines reflected on the Island's unprecedented level of gun crime.

"Clearly this is a time that none of us have seen before," said Mr. Caines.

"But we have a [teenager] in hospital, and a man in hospital, and I must ask anyone who can help us by providing us with information about what happened to come forward. We have to make sure we are in a position where we can know exactly what happened and bring these people to justice.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Western Stars Community Club around the time of this incident and saw anything suspicious or anyone acting suspiciously to contact Police on 295-0011 or the independent 24 hour confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477."
