Campaigners against sexual orientation discrimination hold workshop
A group lobbying for discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation to be outlawed is holding a workshop this weekend for supporters.
Suzanne Mayall, from Two Words and a Comma, said in an e-mail promoting the session that it was aimed at empowering "all of us to help Bermuda reach another milestone in our history of progress on human rights".
The organisation was formed in April 2007 to push for an amendment to the Human Rights Act 1981 to ensure equal rights for all, whether gay, straight or bisexual. MP Renee Webb had failed the previous year to get the change through Parliament.
The Human Rights Commission said earlier this week it feared the amendment would not be tabled in the upcoming parliamentary session, despite a promise from former Culture Minister Dale Butler in April.
Along with the Bermuda Bar Association and Amnesty International Bermuda, it is urging Government to ensure the amendment goes ahead.
Ms Mayall wrote in her e-mail this week that Two Words and a Comma was committed to ensuring the law was changed and believed it had a "winning strategy".
She said: "A 2007 poll reveals that over 90 percent of Bermuda's residents believe that people should not be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation.
"One reason why this has not been legislated is because the voices of the vast majority of residents have not been heard by Bermuda's lawmakers."
She added: "All we need is for the silent majority to unleash their power by untying their tongues. All we need is you."
The workshop is aimed at giving supporters the "skills and tools" to push for the amendment. Facilitators will include PLP senator and radio host Thaao Dill, HRC chairwoman Venous Memari and The Royal Gazette's editor Bill Zuill.
It takes place tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Centre on Philanthropy, Charities House, 25 Point Finger Road, Paget. Anyone wishing to attend should e-mail smayall@logic.bm.
