Cyclist medevaced after collision
A weekend of accidents on Bermuda's roads left four people injured — one so seriously that he was due to be flown off the Island for treatment last night.
The most serious of the crashes occurred at 10.50 p.m. on Saturday on Harbour Road, Warwick, near the junction with Tamarind Vale.
A Police spokesman explained: "It appears that two men were on a motorcycle travelling west on Harbour Road when the head of the pillion passenger collided with a utility pole. "As a result the victim, a 44-year-old Devonshire man, sustained serious head injuries."
He was initially taken to the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. His condition was described as "critical " yesterday evening, when preparations were underway to fly him to the US for specialist treatment.
The rider of the motorcycle, a 39-year-old man from Sandys was not injured, and was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. Just hours before, another accident also resulted in a man needing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.
Police were called to the scene on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, near the junction with Fractious Street, at around 7.30 p.m.
The spokesman said: "It appears that a motorcycle was travelling east on North Shore Road when the rider, a 59-year-old St. George's man, lost control and collided with a wall.
"As a result the St. George's man was thrown over the wall, landing on the shoreline approximately two metres below.
"He was rushed to KEMH via ambulance where he received treatment for a fractured pelvis."
The victim was said to be in a stable condition yesterday.
According to the Police spokesman, his injuries are not believed to be life threatening but he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit as a precaution due to pre-existing medical conditions.
Later that night, a car and motorcycle collided on the roundabout at the junction of Serpentine Road, Par-la-Ville Road and Woodlands Road in Pembroke.
Police attended the scene at around 11 p.m., with the spokesman reporting: "It appears that the motorcycle was travelling south on Woodlands Road and the car was travelling west on Serpentine Road when the vehicles collided as they both attempted to negotiate the roundabout at the same time.
"As a result, the cycle caught fire and received front end damage. The car also received front end damage."
The motorcycle rider, a 25-year-old man from Pembroke, complained of pain to his leg, but was released from the hospital after treatment.
The car driver, a 33-year-old woman from Devonshire was uninjured.
Around 12.45 yesterday morning, Police were called to a further accident, this time on South Road in Southampton, near the junction with Princess Drive South.
"It appears that a car was travelling west on South Road when the driver, a 19-year-old Sandys parish man, apparently overtook two vehicles travelling in the same direction, lost control and went over an embankment," said the spokesman.
The driver was uninjured but his front seat passenger, an 18-year-old man from Southampton, sustained a bruised hand and complained of pain to his abdomen.
He was released from the hospital after treatment.
Inquiries into all of the incidents were ongoing yesterday. Witnesses should contact the Police on 295-0011 or CrimeStoppers on 1 (800) 623-8477.
