Devonshire Dock set for revamp
The Departments of Conservation Services and Environmental Protection have welcomed proposals to revamp Devonshire Dock.
The planning application, by the Ministry of Works and Engineering, has not attracted any objections from members of the public either. It seeks to revamp the dock by demolishing parts of the seawalls to install new sections, and by replacing concrete deck surfaces.
The Ministry also proposes to install navigation and overhead safety lighting at the popular North Shore fishing facility.
The Department of Conservation Services, responding to the planning application, said: "The terrestrial conservation implications and impact are minimal in the replacement of an existing semi-derelict concrete structure with similar engineered structure."
However it recommended a landscape plan for the back-dock area, "for effective management of pedestrian, dock users and vehicles safety".
It also advised installation of planters with native coastal plants to improve the aesthetics of the Dock, in "regard to the Bermuda Image".
Dr. Fred Ming, Director of Environmental Protection, said the Marine Conservation Officer had reported "no biological concerns at this site".
"The Marine Resources Board had no objection to this application, providing that the appropriate measures are taken to contain the debris."
A decision on the application is expected shortly.
