Driver who struck family on bikes gets a three-year ban
A driver who smashed into two motorcycles at speed — injuring a family of three — has been banned from the roads for three years.
Raymond Simmons, 47, lost control of his car and drifted toward oncoming traffic on Blackwatch Pass, Devonshire, on the afternoon of Friday, September 12, last year.
He crashed into one bike driven by Davinia Jennings and another driven by Roger Jennings whose wife Ingrid was the passenger. Davinia Jennings suffered a broken leg, while Roger and Ingrid also received leg injuries and had to be taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Simmons, of East Terrace, Friswells Hill, Pembroke, was sentenced in Magistrates' Court last Thursday, having previously admitted three counts of causing actual bodily harm by dangerous driving.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $1,000, banned him from driving all vehicles for three years and awarded 12 demerit points against his licence.
The court has previously heard how Simmons was breath-tested at the time, but was under the legal limit as he only had 68 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his blood. A charge of driving while impaired was not proceeded with.
