Drug equipment man says he has changed

A man found in possession of drug equipment told Magistrates' Court yesterday that he was ready to turn his life around.

Gary Raynor, who is currently serving time in jail for another matter, admitted to having drug equipment – a glass bottle, pipe, scissors and razor blade on November 14, 2007.

Before sentencing he told the court: "I was going through a lot of trials and tribulations, not taking my medication. I've turned around and decided to stay clean for the rest of my life."

The court heard that at 10.20 p.m. on November 14 Police approached Raynor on Victoria Street, in Pembroke, in relation to another matter.

Officers noticed Raynor had foam around his mouth and that he was fiddling with his pockets, and when asked he admitted to having pipes on him.

Police searched Raynor and found that he had a cream coloured pouch with two screwdrivers, scissors, a razor blade and other matters in his possession.

Raynor told Police: "I will tell you the truth, I smoke, that's all I have in that bag and one pipe in my pocket." The items later tested positive for cocaine.

In court yesterday Raynor was defended by lawyer Leo Mills who spoke about his client's battle with drug addiction.

Mr. Mills explained that Raynor has been able to turn his life around in the past four months and had been "clean" during his stint in jail.

The lawyer asked the Magistrate to show his client "one glimmer of light and hope" in regards to sentencing.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo believed only time would tell whether Raynor had really taken control of his life and sentenced him to one month imprisonment to run concurrently with his existing sentence.
