Drunk driver fined, given one-year ban

A blood alcohol reading of three times the legal limit earned a Pembroke man a $1,000 fine and a year-long driving ban.

Harry Krahn, 53, of Mission Lane, was riding swerving and randomly applying his motorcycle's brakes along St. John's Road in Pembroke, Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess told Magistrates' Court.

Police, suspecting Krahn was riding while intoxicated, attempted to stop him by turning on their emergency lights. After nearly crashing into the sidewalk, proceeding further down St. John's Road and almost falling off his bike, he eventually pulled over.

According to the report read by Ms Burgess, the officers noticed Krahns eyes were red and that he smelled of alcohol.

Krahn was subsequently arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he submitted to a blood-alcohol test. The lowest of his two tests showed his blood alcohol level as 240 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. To legally drive, one must have a blood-alcohol level of less than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood meaning Krahn was three times over the legal limit.

Krahn pleaded guilty to the offence of driving while impaired by alcohol and apologised for his actions.

"I made a huge mistake and I am sorry," he said.
