Group formed to solve gun violence problem
With 14 shootings in under seven months the time for talking about the root of Bermuda's escaping gun violence has passed.
Instead the community needs to solve the problem before another person is killed as Kumi Harford was last weekend when he was gunned down near his home.
And according to a grass roots group 'Rise Above, Bermuda' this will require all Bermudians — regardless of race, political affiliation, religious beliefs or economic status — to patch the Island's social fabric back together.
Tomorrow night they are challenging people to show up to Victor Scott Primary School at 6 p.m. and kick start 30 days of targeted community involvement, which they believe will help broker a cease fire.
'Rise Above, Bermuda' hopes to promote "leadership, mentorship, capacity-building and action to impact solutions in neighbourhoods and communities in Bermuda".
It was started by four men — brothers Wayne, Dwayne and Travis Caines and Dr. Lou Matthews — who grew up near St. Monica's Road the day after Mr. Harford was murdered in the very same neighbourhood.
"The time for talking is over, the country has been talked to death," a statement from the group said. "It is time to do something about it.
The group hopes that community leaders, church groups, sports organisations, neighbourhood groups and adults willing to simply lend a hand will band together in the next 30 days to help put a stop to the violence. However, despite the 30 day challenge the group aims to provide sustain community support throughout the next year.
"We are not reinventing the wheel here," the statement said. "We want people who are willing to help to come out to the meeting."
They hope to be able to connect people who are interested in getting involved to groups already in place as well as forming new ones to meet specific needs.
The group believes that everyone on the Island — no matter what walk of life they come from — has something to offer and can fit into one of the below teams:
• Gang Intervention
Community leaders have been challenged to directly intervene in the escalating gang violence through talks and actions which facilitate immediate ceasing of gun violence within the next 30 days.
• Faith-Based Engagement
Religious groups have been tasked with engaging the spiritual growth of our neighbourhoods and provide the spiritual resource for people needing guidance, reflection and discipleship.
• Community Capacity Building
Local neighbourhood churches, football clubs and community organisations have been asked to develop immediate, strategic, plans to help communities "resist, react and respond to the challenges posed by violence and gang culture",
• National Mentoring
The group has also challenged every Bermudian to commit to the mentorship of at least one child in a real and tangible way within the next 30 days.
• Youth, Vision and Development
They hope to create safe places for young people away from gang violence and are asking those involved in gun violence to agree to a cease fire for 30 days.
