The H1N1 vaccine is now available on the Island, the Department of Health has announced.

According to Chief Medical Officer John Cann, supplies of the vaccine came later than expected, but there is now an adequate amount to meet the Island's needs.

The vaccine will be distributed to high risk individuals first, as in other jurisdictions, then to the general public early next month.

Priority candidates include people over the age of six months with medical conditions that could place them at increased risk of complications such as asthma, diabetes, heart, lung or renal disease, obesity, pregnancy or immune suppression.

Essential health care workers and community workers are also considered high risk and are being asked to take necessary steps to get the vaccine.

The Department of Health will make the vaccine for H1N1, also known as swine flu, available to these individuals at their physician, paediatrician and obstetrician's offices.

The vaccine will also be available from Department of Health clinics this week at a cost of $10 for people with medical conditions and a prescription from their physician.

Dr. Cann explained that while the pandemic influenza has probably already peaked on the Island, it remains a significant threat to the public's health.

He also emphasised the importance of getting the vaccine, especially for individuals likely to be susceptible to the complications that can accompany influenza.

The H1N1 vaccine is offered at the Hamilton Health Centre on weekdays from 8.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. with a prescription from a physician.
