'Hit list' fear teen returns to Island to face drug charges

A teenager who reportedly fled the Island after his name appeared at the top of a hit list has returned to face drug possession charges.

Jahfari Raynor and his brother Sadune, are charged with possessing cocaine and cannabis in a room at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on April 2.

Their mother Erica Raynor, 37, her boyfriend Temiko Wilson, 22, Malcolm Augustus, 18, and Dayrion McCalla, 19, are charged along with them.

Jahfari, 17, had been scheduled to appear in Magistrates' Court to face the charges on August 30.

When he didn't show, defence lawyer Llewellyn Peniston told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that Police escorted him and his 16-year-old brother off the Island.

The lawyer said the pair feared for their safety after their names appeared on a hit list.

Both teens have been shot at in the last few months Sadune required hospital treatment after one incident.

On Wednesday, Mr. Peniston said it would have been a "genuine risk" for the teenagers to appear in court on August 30.

The lawyer told Magistrates' Court his client returned to Bermuda to help deal with the court matters.

"He returned to the jurisdiction when he learnt about the matter, and he did so of his own volition," Mr. Peniston said.

No reference was made in court to Sadune's whereabouts.

Mr. Tokunbo ordered Jahfari to be held in remand until his trial begins in December, saying: "He is before this court for serious matters and that is taken very seriously.

"If he is concerned about his safety, we can hold him for his protection."

Following the order, Mr. Peniston told The Royal Gazette: "It was an absolutely astonishing development, but having given generous advice and opinions to all parties, he decided to take a chance and to come back."
