Housing Minister tells Senate Perimeter Lane tenants will be responsible neighbours

Government housing tenants on Perimeter Lane will be responsible neighbours, area residents have been assured.

Housing Minister David Burch yesterday told senators he had met with persons living on Perimeter Lane to get the message across that their new neighbours were selected having "consistently demonstrated that they are responsible tenants".

"They are tenants who do not receive financial assistance and in the main are seeking to eventually own their own home," Sen. Burch said.

"By no means are we dropping people in their neighbourhood that we wouldn't want living next to us. The Bermuda Housing Corporation will be on hand to facilitate a smooth integration of the new residents."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new affordable housing units in Pembroke was held on July 22.

The units follow the completion of similar schemes at Loughlands, Butterfield Lane and Anchorage Lane.

They demand that 25 percent of a household income goes toward rent and ten percent put aside for the down payment on a home.

Sen. Burch said he hopes to be hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on completion of the first phase of Harbour View Village at Southside later this year.

The Perimeter Lane project consists of 12 one-bedroom units, 16 two-bedroom units and ten three-bedroom units.

It was completed in three years and three months at a cost of just under $20 million.
