Man banned from driving after admitting walking cycle while impaired

A 37-year-old man was fined $1,000 yesterday after admitting to being dangerously in care and control of a vehicle.

Anthony Pereira was arrested on Wednesday for walking with a cycle into oncoming traffic.

Yesterday Magistrates' Court heard that officers saw Pereira with the bike and when they approached him, they noticed his eyes were bloodshot, his breath smelled of alcohol and he was unsteady on his feet. The keys were still in the ignition.

Asked if he had anything to drink, the defendant said: "Yes, I had a few."

Pereira was arrested and cautioned and then taken to the Hamilton Police where he was charged.

Magistrate Juan Wolffe fined him $1,000 and gave him ten demerit points and a one-year driving ban.
