Police probe underage drinking concern at BHS after-prom party

Police have launched an investigation into whether teenagers were drinking underage at the Bermuda High School after-prom party which erupted in bloody violence last weekend.

Some reports now say up to 400 young people packed into Royal Bermuda Yacht Club — 300 more than expected — with just two security guards on duty on Saturday night.

Yesterday, Police confirmed at least two people were injured after fighting broke out at about 1.25 a.m. on Sunday. It is thought gang members from 'town' invaded the party and fought with a boy from Somerset who was dating one of the BHS graduates.

Twenty to 30 guests are understood to have been under 18, with no ID checks or adult chaperones.

Witnesses have previously said one boy was hit over the head with a bottle, the ceiling was brought down by someone swinging a chain, and a large amount of blood and glass was spilled across the floor.

Officers said a 20-year-old Sandys man was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with superficial lacerations to the back of his head. He was treated for his injuries and released but made no formal complaint.

One BHS graduate suffered a slight injury and was treated by paramedics at the scene. Trouble-makers had all escaped by the time Police arrived.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said yesterday: "Around 1.25 a.m. on Sunday, the Police were called to a reported disturbance at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

"On arrival there was no sign of a disturbance but it appeared that an after-prom party for the graduating class of BHS was taking place at the premises.

"Enquires have revealed that the after-prom party was organised by students of BHS and was intended for the graduating class and specially invited guests.

"However, at some point, the organisers decided to open this event to the public. Some time during the party, a dispute arose between a young man from the Somerset area and another group and this led to him receiving the injury for which he sought treatment.

"Alcohol was being served at the event and it is believed that a number of persons at the event were under the age of 18. The (Bermuda Police Service) has commenced an investigation to determine the level of adult supervision at this event and whether any offences against the Liquor License Act were committed. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing."

RBYC boss David Furtado is said to have provided Police with CCTV footage showing a large group wearing 'gang uniform' of white T-shirts, jeans shorts and white sneakers.

Police are also keen for any young people who filmed the fracas with their cell phones to get in touch.

Witnesses should call Police on 295-0011 or the anonymous CrimeStoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
