Power utility pole falls down after car crash
A woman lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a utility pole on Somerset Road on Monday morning, resulting in 100 homes and businesses losing power.
The driver, a 27-year-old Sandys Parish woman, was travelling north on Somerset Road when her vehicle collided with the pole, which in turn landed on top of her car around 8.20 a.m. Police report the woman was not injured, however the car was extensively damaged.
Traffic in both directions was blocked and cars were diverted through Scotts Hill Road and the Cavello Bay area throughout Monday afternoon.
Some businesses like Jamaican Grill were closed for the day, while others like Sandys 360 were not affected. Arnold's Supermarket and The Market Place in Sandys both report they lost power, however business was not impacted.
The power outage happened at 8.21 a.m. and was immediately reported to the Belco Operations Centre, explained corporate communications officer Susan McGrath-Smith.
Five crews with 12 men worked to disassemble and remove the existing pole, transformer and overhead lines and power was restored by 5.18 p.m.
Ms McGrath-Smith said: "I am told things took a little time to get going as time was needed to isolate all of the equipment (and) turn off power, so that crews could work safely. Also, the number of trucks that could be brought in to work in that area was limited by the area itself (which is a) narrow road (and a) small area to work in.
"The crews did a terrific job, and did it quickly and safely."
