Sailor required assistance on return voyage
A sailor who was recused seven miles off Bermuda last month ran into difficulty getting back home to Virginia.
Rick Knight, battled 30 foot waves to reach the Island after his mainsail and genoa were shredded by waves and wind on the second day of his voyage.
The 63-year-old was enroute from Norfolk, Virginia, to Bermuda in his 36-foot sloop, Three Generations, when he was confronted by the gigantic wave.
He left the Island May 10 and suffered a similar fate when the sail he purchased in Bermuda was ripped to shreds and his rudder damaged.
The duty officer at Bermuda Maritime Center said: "The American Coast Guard managed to speak with him. He didn't have enough fuel to return to Bermuda or to the States. A vessel called Sophie Oldendorff pulled up next to him and they have dropped him off some fuel and now he's headed to Norfolk."
Meanwhile, a vessel ran aground on reefs near Bermuda. But the boat was able to backtrack and did not cause any damage.
