Forty-seven seniors were honoured by Government at an awards ceremony yesterday afternoon.

Many of those honoured had been nominated for their community work by charities, family members, colleagues and peers.

The event, which kicked off Senior Citizens' Week, drew a crowd of approximately 500.

Acting Premier Neletha Butterfield said: "We recognise and celebrate all that we as a people owe to our elders who laid the foundation for the Bermuda that we all benefit from today.

"We will continue to make life better for you in your golden years, as we learn from your wisdom and your knowledge and take steps to further improve your quality of life."

Emcee Ruth Thomas told the audience that the week's motto is 'growing old gracefully and with dignity'.

Performances were given by the Mount Zion Male Voice Choir and musicians Howard Rego, Toni Bari and Toni Robinson.

Health Minister Walter Roban said the Island's senior population is the growing sector. And he called upon them to continue to serve as guides to Bermuda's youth.

"We need your wisdom to always be available to us," he said.

Opposition Leader Kim Swan told the seniors that their work was not yet done.

"Seniors you hold the key and you understand it better than anybody," he said. "I'm telling you this Country is in trouble and it needs your help, it needs your values."

Events will continue to be held at 2 p.m. in the Fairmont Hamilton Princess' Harbourview Ballroom through Thursday.

A picnic is planned at Shelly Bay Park on Friday. All senior citizens are invited.
