Spicelands riding centre changes hands
A Bermuda riding centre has new owners and exciting plans for the future.
Spicelands riding centre, on Middle Road, in Warwick, has recently been bought by Liza and Delton Outerbridge.
"I always dreamt of having my own stables," said Mrs. Outerbridge who moved to Bermuda 16 years ago from Worcester, in the UK, where she had her own horse.
Mrs Outerbridge first came to Bermuda on holiday even enjoying a breakfast ride at the time at Spicelands now she and her husband are busy realising their plans for the centre.
"We want to create a fun family environment here at Spicelands where everyone can have the opportunity to ride. Not just elite riders," said Mrs. Outerbridge.
The trail rides and lessons are running as before but Mrs. Outerbridge also wants to start a pony club and a mothers' riding group next year.
"In order to realise the plans some building work has already been completed. Stables have been painted and repaired, new bathrooms and a riders' lounge have been added.
A shopping trip for new ponies is planned in the spring and in addition to the one full-time instructor and three part-time staff currently employed, an additional instructor is due to arrive from California by the end of the year. One more instructor will be recruited in the New Year.
Locals are offered trail rides at a reduced rate and cod fish breakfast rides are planned for next season. "Many locals are amazed by the nature experience the trail ride offers.
"One lady arrived the other week with the trail ride on her bucket list. She was scared at first but by the end of the ride she was relaxed and happy. It's so nice to see what pleasure people get out of the ride," added Mrs. Outerbridge.
"We want to update our show jumping fences and there is an opportunity for companies to sponsor a fence and have their name or logo painted on it," said Mrs. Outerbridge. who admitted that her husband was "petrified of horses".
