Trainee archivists sent abroad for internships

Two Bermudian trainee archivists have been commended for receiving six-month internship posts overseas.

Mandellas Lightbourne has been placed at Westminster's House of Lords Archives and Nicole Simons has taken a position at the British Columbia Provincial Archives, in western Canada.

The two appraisal archivist trainees have worked with the Bermuda Archives since June 2008. They finished studies for their Masters degrees in archives and records administration last month.

Bermuda Archives director Karla Hayward said: "I am absolutely delighted with Mr. Lightbourne and Mrs. Simons' achievements. We will look forward to welcoming them back in April 2011 as full archival professionals."

Premier Ewart Brown hailed the postings as "excellent news" and said they encouraged varied career choices for Bermuda's young people.

Both internships run from October 4 to March 31.
