Tributes are paid to man found dead in water
A Hamilton Parish man who drowned was yesterday praised as being a hard worker and a responsible member of the community.
Shane Kelly, 40, was found unconscious in Green Bay, Hamilton Parish around 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
This newspaper understands Mr. Kelly, a management services manager for HSBC's security services, was found floating near a private dock.
He was pulled out of the water by a man who was passing by. The man attempted to give him CPR but was too late.
Mr. Kelly's boat was found going in circles in the bay with the engine still running.
He is survived by his wife Karlene.
Police Media Relations manager Dwayne Caines said yesterday: "Police can now confirm the death of 40-year-old Shane Carlyle Kelly of Old Road in Hamilton Parish.
"It appears that a few minutes after 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, Police responded to a report of a marine incident at Green Bay Road in Hamilton Parish.
"Members of the community saw a man in the water by the Green Bay dock in a non-responsive state and as a result the emergency services were called.
"However, the 40-year-old Hamilton Parish man was pronounced dead by an on-call physician at 8.30 p.m. Foul play is not suspected in the death of Shane Kelly.
"The Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."
Mr. Kelly was a member of the Oddfellows' Somers Pride of India Lodge.
Leo Mills, the Noble Grand or presiding officer of the lodge, spoke highly of Mr. Kelly.
"In the context of the time that I knew him, he was certainly an enthusiastic member of the Oddfellows lodge. He seemed to be someone who was certainly very focused on his career and trying to be a responsible member of the community. He was very focused in that regard.
"I was certainly personally quite shaken to hear of his untimely death at such a young age. On behalf of the officers and members of the Alexandrina Lodge, we certainly extend our sincere condolences to his family. I think he will be a great miss to his wide circle of friends and colleagues."
HSBC CEO Phil Butterfield said: "It was with great sadness that HSBC learnt of the untimely passing of Shane Kelly. Shane joined HSBC in 2006 as a management services manager within [HSBC's security services].
"Many staff know that Shane was a remarkable example of an employee who showed exemplary work ethic and commitment to servicing his clients to the highest extent. He invested heavily in mentoring and developing his team and was highly respected by his colleagues both in Bermuda and around the HSBC group.
"Shane has been described by the management services team as the 'rock' of the team. He often provided wise counsel and always had the best interests of his staff at the forefront. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and friends."
