Tuff Shoes owner confesses to drug charges

A jailed shoe shop owner has admitted two drugs related offences in addition to the crimes which landed him a seven-year sentence.

Goodwin Davano Spencer, 41 — already in prison after being convicted of 11 charges of money laundering totalling more than $145,000 — was given an extra 18 months to his sentence for cannabis possession on Wednesday.

However, the sentence will run concurrently with the seven years he already had, meaning his stretch behind bars will not be any longer than he already faced.

At Supreme Court yesterday, Spencer pleaded guilty to possessing 41.49 grams — about 1.5 ounces — of cannabis.

He also admitted possession of a food vacuum packaging tool which he used to keep the drugs fresh.

Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves gave him a 12-month sentence for that charge, also to run concurrently.

Spencer denied a third charge of conspiracy to supply cannabis and claimed the drugs were for his personal use.

The prosecution chose not to pursue that charge yesterday, although it will remain on file.

Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke told the court Spencer's Tuff Shoes shop in Court Street was searched by Police on November 29, 2005. They found five packets containing cannabis.

A search of his home at Loyal Hill Road, Devonshire, uncovered the vacuum packaging machine, which also contained traces of cannabis.

In December last year, Spencer was jailed after a jury heard he was involved in money laundering dealings with profits from drug trafficking on the part of Trinidadian Wayne Jagoo.

The court was told how he sent money, or tried to help Jagoo get access to his money, through bank wires and bank drafts, between November 2004 and November 2005.

He was said to have used accounts belonging to other people to send them money which was then passed on to Jagoo.

He also helped Jagoo by getting people to open Bermuda bank accounts, then giving Jagoo the ATM cards.
