Woman, 22, still insists she wasn't driving drunk

A Hamilton Parish woman pleaded guilty to impaired driving, although she claimed not to be drunk at the time of her arrest.

Magistrates' Court heard that Kiffinae Cameron, 22, was encroaching on a sidewalk before driving through a stop sign on Cavendish Road, Pembroke, at 3.26 a.m. on June 27.

According to documents read by Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess, Police saw Cameron's white Volkswagen bumping into and riding on top of a sidewalk. After following her for a short time the officers observed Cameron drive through a stop sign and, turning on their emergency lights, immediately stopped her.

The officers approached Cameron and, while informing her that she was stopped under suspicion of impaired driving, noticed her eyes were red and could smell intoxicating liquors, the court heard.

Ms Burgess said Cameron was adamant that she was not intoxicated stating she had only consumed "two beers".

"I am not drunk. I will take whatever test you want me to," she allegedly told the officers.

Cameron was taken to Hamilton Police station where she submitted to a blood-alcohol test. The court heard that the lowest reading of two tests showed Cameron had 102 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner asked Cameron if she had anything to say.

"I apologise," replied Cameron. "But I was not drunk, I was not intoxicated. I did not realise that drinking so little could make you fail the test."

Mr. Warner fined Cameron $1,000 and disqualified her from driving for one year for the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol.
