Breach of Code of Conduct

In a story in Friday’s newspaper, The Royal Gazette failed to seek comment from Marc Telemaque, in his capacity as former Permanent Secretary of Transport, to comments made by the Auditor General, Heather Jacobs Matthews. In those comments, Ms Jacobs Matthews said Mr Telemaque should be fined for ignoring Financial Instructions in the Transport Control Department project. The failure to contact Mr Telemaque was a breach of the Media Council’s Code of Conduct, which The Royal Gazette has agreed to abide by.Mr Telemaque has since been offered the opportunity to respond. The Royal Gazette also accepts that it should have sought comment from Mr Telemaque in response to statements made by the Accountant General at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Assembly. In that case, Mr Telemaque contacted The Royal Gazette after a story appeared on The Royal Gazette’s website. Subseqent newspaper and website stories carried Mr Telemaque’s response.
