Alleged gunman shot victim seven times, court hears

A gunman rode into the parking lot of a Sandys bar during happy hour and shot a patron multiple times, a jury heard this morning.Marico Bassett, 20, is on trial accused of being the gunman who attacked Randolph Lightbourne in broad daylight outside the Charing Cross Tavern on July 23, last year.According to prosecutor Maria Sofianos, the victim was using his cellphone outside the bar in Cambridge Road around 5pm when Mr Bassett rode up on a motorcycle.She said he was wearing jeans, a white teeshirt, a red bandanna around his neck and a helmet, and was armed with a firearm."The defendant shot at Mr Lightbourne multiple times. In an effort to protect himself, Mr Lightbourne dropped to the ground and used his own motorcycle to shield himself from the bullets," she told the jury.Mr Lightbourne, of Sandys, who was aged 44 at the time, suffered seven gunshot wounds to his buttocks, lower abdomen and left arm. According to the prosecutor, he named Mr Bassett as the culprit when police interviewed him in hospital.She added that the whole incident was caught on CCTV cameras and Mr Lightbourne knew Mr Bassett because he was at one point a good friend of his son.Detectives arrested the accused man at his home in Loyalty Lane, Sandys, the following morning.Mr Bassett denies charges of attempted murder, using a firearm to commit an indictable offence and possession of two bullets.
