Skippy-brand peanut butter in health scare

Salmonella fears have sparked an international recall of several batches of Skippy Reduced Fat Peanut Butter.According to a statement from the Department of Health, the recall only affects 16.3oz plastic jars of the product with:lThe UPC number 048001006812 and 048001006782 (found on the side of the jars label, below the bar code).lBest-if-used-by dates of May1612LR1, May1712LR1, May1812LR1, May1912LR1, May2012LR1 and May2112LR1 (found stamped on the lid of the jar). All other jars of Skippy product are not affected by the recall. It is believed that some of the recalled peanut butter may have been shipped to the Island and sold, and as a result the public is being advised that if they have purchased Skippy Reduced Fat Peanut Butter to check the product’s codes to make sure that it is safe. The recall began after a routine sampling programme by the manufacturer revealed the finished product may contain the bacteria salmonella.Contact with salmonella can cause serious infection in young children, frail or elderly individuals, or those with weak immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella can experience fever, diarrheoa (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The recalled product was distributed to 16 US states but, according to the manufacturer, no actual illnesses have been reported so far.Anyone who finds the UPC and best-if-used-by dates match the recalled batches, they are asked to return or discard the jar as soon as possible.A manager at Lindo’s Family Foods last night said staff had searched their shelves, but discovered none of the recalled product.“We checked our stock to take the affected product off the shelves, but we didn’t have any.” he said.Useful websites: www.health.gov.bm, www.peanutbutter.com.
