Repairs needed to keep Deliverance shipshape

More work needed: Michael Hooper helps to restore the Deliverance in this file picture.

The St George’s Foundation is seeking tenders to fix wear and tear to the decking of the Deliverance.Executive director Sharon Jacobs described the work as “expected upkeep” needed because of the replica ship’s exposure to the elements.“We have just got some basic maintenance work needed with the deck and we thought it could be a pretty big job, so we put it out for tender,” she said. She said it is not yet known when or for how long the work will take place, or if the attraction will have to be closed while work is carried out.“We’ve already had a few people interested in putting together a proposal, but until the proposals are in, we won’t know all the details,” Ms Jacobs said. The Deliverance was built in 1967 and run as a tourist attraction. It was gifted to the Foundation by former owner Nick Duffy. The ship has suffered damage in numerous hurricanes and lost its mast during Fabian in 2003.In 2008, the ship was headed for demolition due to wear and tear, when the Bank of Bermuda Foundation donated $300,000 to her restoration.Michael Hooper rebuilt around 40 percent of the ship over a six-month period. Improvements were made to the mast, boom, deck and all the rigging before the Deliverance was formally reopened in July, 2009.Ms Jacobs said that the repair work would help to protect the attraction’s numerous displays, including an animatronic talking figure of colonist William Strachey.Useful website: www.stgeorgesfoundation.com
