Transport looks to overhaul bus schedule

Transport Minister Terry Lister says a shake-up of bus and ferry timetables is on the way.

An overhaul of bus and ferry timetables is on its way and Transport Minister Terry Lister has warned not everyone is going to like it.Transport bosses are currently “putting their heads together” to work out how they can save money in light of massive reductions in budget funding. The Department of Transport is looking at changing the frequency of services depending on how many people use each of the Island’s bus and ferry routes.Mr Lister said “a more economical service with limited resources” has to be established as the bus service’s budget has been reduced by $1.3 million and the ferry service has seen a $2.3 million cut.Talks are ongoing which means the new public transport timetable, which was due to start today, has been delayed.Mr Lister said all decisions would be made “within the next two weeks” saying: “we have to do what we have to do.”He said: “Some routes have historically been better used than others and that’s what we are looking closely at. We have to make sure the timetable fits in with the popularity of routes.“The cost of having a bus going from Somerset to town with no-one on it is very expensive.“We are looking at the efficiency of things rather than the structure. We are putting our heads together and having a rethink.”Mr Lister added that “it wouldn’t all be bad news” as they planned to hire five new drivers. These employees will be hired to cover shifts on busy routes which would otherwise incur overtime.Mr Lister refused to talk about specifics but hinted the Cedar Hill area of Warwick would benefit from more buses. The timetable changes are being discussed as residents continue to voice their fears about being “left stranded” if routes are axed.Earlier this week The Royal Gazette highlighted the plight of Hinson’s Island residents who said they had heard the Hamilton to Paget/Warwick pink ferry route was going to be axed at the weekends. And today we report how St David’s residents never know if and when buses are going to turn up as route number six no longer runs if drivers phone in sick.Residents in the Spanish Point and Ord Road areas have also long complained about their infrequent bus services.Mr Lister said: “It is a challenge but we are working to benefit everyone the best we can.“We are going to come up with a solution and we are confident it will work. We are not assuming that everyone is going to be happy, it never works like that; we won’t be able to please everyone.“But if the majority of people accept things and are willing to go forward, we’ll know we will have got it right.“If everyone is up in arms then we will have to go back to the drawing board.”Mr Lister added that residents should continue to take advantage of the Island’s minibus service, as “that’s what it is there for”.
