Blakeney charged with attempted murder
Jahmel Blakeney made his first appearance before a Bermuda court this morning to face two charges of attempted murder.The 29-year-old son of Cabinet Minister Glenn Blakeney was extradited from the United States on Friday night, 17 months after he left Bermuda.He is accused of shooting Shaki Minors and his pregnant girlfriend Renee Kuchler outside Southside Cinema late on November 12, 2009.Dressed in a grey prison sweatshirt, Mr Blakeney was not required to say anything as Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner read the two charges of attempted murder to him.Mr Blakeney was flanked by five uniformed police officers and two plain clothed detectives for the two-minute appearance.Prosecutor Cindy Clarke requested a further hearing in two weeks, and defence lawyer Charles Richardson made no application for bail.Mr Blakeney’s father was not in court for the hearing.Jahmel Blakeney was arrested along with another man, Sanchey Grant, 19, from Warwick, the day after the shooting. He fled to the US, where he has citizenship, after being released on police bail. He was charged in his absence on April 26, 2010 and arrested by US Marshals at a residence in Brooklyn, New York on June 10.Extradition proceedings against him were commenced by the Bermuda Government, but have been delayed due to various appeals launched by Mr Blakeney in the US courts.Meanwhile Mr Grant was charged at Magistrates’ Court on April 22, 2010 with the same charges of attempted murder. A third man, 25-year-old Kinte Smith, was charged on April 14 2011.They are expected to go on trial at Supreme Court in due course.
