Autism expert praises Bermuda’s teachers

More than 100 people turned up for an autism workshop presented by visiting US expert Paula Kluth. The all-day class at Mount St Agnes Academy was the biggest so far hosted by Bermuda Autism Support and Education (BASE).Dr Kluth praised the Island’s educators, saying she overheard many teachers saying they were going to put her ideas into practice. She said: “The fact that Bermuda is small has some wonderful benefits. Teachers have to learn from one another and they have to collaborate. In addition, in a small community, creating changes in an educational system can be much easier than in a larger region.“Word can travel quickly and so can innovative practices with just a few dozen schools on the Island,” she said.Dr Kluth advocates inclusive classroom environments for students with disabilities. As part of Autism Awareness Month, the workshop taught parents and professionals how to better relate with individuals on the autism spectrum.Useful web links:www.paulakluth.com, www.bermudaautism.org
