Taxi industry report is eagerly awaited

Minister Terry Lister

Recommendations on how to improve the future of the taxi industry in Bermuda are to be drawn up by the end of the month. The Taxi Authority Review Committee (TARC) is expected to hand over its report to Transport Minister Terry Lister “any day now”.Mr Lister formed the committee, which is chaired by Neville Tyrell, last month to determine if the Island needs a taxi authority. The committee has held a series of public meetings to consider the scope of the Taxi Authority, review the benefits of establishing the Authority, and determine how the Authority would function differently.Mr Lister said he was “very much looking forward” to seeing what the committee had come up with.He said: “The report is coming to me by April 30. The committee have been very positive about things, they say they have been getting a good response all the way through.“But we shall see, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. We are looking for long-term success of the taxi industry and are really keen to get on with things.”Committee members also include St David’s MP Lovitta Foggo, who is the chairwoman of the Public Services Vehicles Licensing Board, Clyde Darrell, general manager at Grotto Bay Hotel, and taxi owners Owen Darrell and Irving Butterfield. Technical support has been provided by the Bermuda Transportation Department.Regarding the taxi industry in general, Mr Lister reported that there were “the same issues rather than any news ones”.Mr Lister said taxi drivers wanted reassurance that they would “be busy and taking money” and he believes the amount of work is increasing now the tourist season has started. He said a few months back he was “constantly being approached” by West End taxi drivers who complained there were no fares to pick up. But now when Mr Lister goes to the West End to speak to taxi drivers, he says: “I can never find any as they are all driving around passengers”.Mr Lister said: “We will continue to work to uphold standards and enhance standards of the taxi industry.“We want to know that those who are driving cabs are ambassadors for Bermuda. We also want to know that cabs are going to be where they are needed most.”
