Fire destroys parked car

Up in flames: Truneh Flood looks over at the burnt-out car owned by a family member in the Crown Hill area of Pembroke. An early morning fire destroyed the car.

A Devonshire man says he narrowly avoided a disaster after the car he’d just been driving burst into flames.Truneh Flood, who lives at Crown Hill Lane, near Dock Hill, had parked his friend’s Hyundai Getz outside his home in the early hours of April 26.Mr Flood was woken by a neighbour at around 1.15am to find the vehicle ablaze.“The fire was very intense, and the car went up in very short time. It’s a narrow road with a lot of houses close together in this neighbourhood, and if the thing had exploded it would have been a whole other issue.”Police and firefighters arrived quickly, Mr Flood said. But by the time the fire was extinguished “the front end was completely burnt out”.Because the doors were locked and the windows had not been broken, emergency services concluded that a mechanical-electrical fault had most likely started the blaze. The six-year-old car, valued at about $8,000, belonged to Luanne Joell, with whom Mr Flood has a daughter. He said: “The thing I’m thankful for is that my fiancee or daughter or grandson wasn’t in it. I’d been driving the car earlier that night we’re talking about a short space of time.”Ms Joell’s insurance is to cover damages plus the bill for removing the remains of the car.
