Celebrities 'make bail' during 'Lockup' fundraiser
Local celebrities spent time behind bars on Friday as part of the third annual Celebrity Lockup fundraiser for PRIDE Bermuda.Local celebrities, including Bruce Barritt, Patrina “Power Girl” O’Connor and Keevil “The Captain” Burgess were all publicly “arrested” and tried for their knowledge, or lack thereof, of the impact of drugs on the Island. All of the celebrities were sentenced to jail time, and had to raise bail from friends, fans and family in order to regain their freedom. PRIDE executive director Judith Burgess said that it was still too early to determine how much this years fundraiser earned, but said the event was a success.“Both the celebrities and the audience totally enjoyed the event,” she said. “We had someone come in and empty their wallet because they wanted to see The Captain get out of jail for the weekend. It was only $2, but our saying this year is nothing too little, nothing too large.“We also had one celebrity who actually made their bail, but their family offered us $250 to keep him in jail. You never know.“One celebrity had to drop out on short notice and one of my staff volunteered to take up the position and managed to raise $550.“That might not seem like a lot, but for us in this climate, and to do that in under 48 hours, we are very pleased.”Last year’s event managed to raise $75,000 for the drug prevention charity, which works with families, teachers and community activists to develop drug education programmes.Useful website: www.pridebermuda.bm.
